the completist mp3 collector, part 1

[this is good]
I have a 56 GB music collection. I'd guess about 60% of that is duplicate music. A distressingly large portion of the music files don't have correct id3 tags. This falls into many categories, like:
- missing info (like, no album name or no track name)
- the right info in the wrong fields
- the wrong album name

How do I tame this beast? The show duplicates function (under View) cannot be trusted to work properly if the id3 tags are not exactly right.
yeh, i also have a mass of mp3s with no tags at all and cryptic file names. jaikoz uses acoustic fingerprinting to ID tracks and it's correct more often than not, but not so much on really obscure tracks. once as many files as possible are tagged properly, run the Show Duplicates function in iTunes and then sort the view by track name. then i command (apple) + click on tracks to delete and command + delete them permanently.
HOLY COW.... 56 gb?! What is the mean bit rate of all these mp3s? I'm slowly reconverting my hundreds of cds to mp3, using vbr... They end up in the 160-170kbps area. I used to rip at 192 and up, but vbr seems alright so far. If my other hd in my old computer didn't kick, I might have had around 20gb, or more.
21,372 files = 98 GB. also, i've found that VBR doesn't play nice with all players/streamers. i used to stream live from my last apartment and VBR doesn't downsample gracefully on the fly when needed.
ooh... I never considered that. I've wanted to stream too. If I ever am in a position to, I'll have to reconvert. :-/
